praise for my beautiful black hair

What a gift St. Clair has given us all by capturing black hair’s authenticity and beauty and the stories that live within us. What a treasure Khloe will have, seeing that her crown is to be worn proudly and without shame or settling. My Beautiful Black Hair is a divine example of courage, self-love, acceptance, and diversity.
— Alexandra Elle, Author of After the Rain
This is a community’s love letter to Khloe, but it is also a self-reflective love note, an effort to agitate social constructs that have told all Black women that the bodies we are born into are not enough. The images are glorious, the anecdotes at times tender, at times seething. The entire book is powerful.
— Elizabeth Acevedo, New York Times bestselling author of The Poet X and Clap When You Land
I had fully expected beautiful photographs, but what I had not expected was that My Beautiful Black Hair was going to be a prayer, a hosanna, a meditation, a testimony, a gentle touch, and a sigh of relief. This book loves on Black women and girls in a way that I have rarely seen. Though this book is obviously set in present-day, something about it seems to span history, making it feel cosmic and magical. This is the book I want to gift every Black woman I know. I feel so incredibly honored and grateful to have been allowed to be a witness.
— Robert Jones, Jr., New York Times bestselling author of The Prophets
St. Clair’s efforts to empower her kid sister through My Beautiful Black Hair is one of the best examples of sibling love I’ve ever seen. The photographs and interviews embody the strength and struggle of Black girls everywhere. It is an excellent piece for our very unique hair experiences.
— Keturah A. Bobo, New York Times bestselling illustrator of I Am Enough
There is a shared story in Black women’s hair that tends to hold both a bit of joy and, at times, despair. My Beautiful Black Hair is a love letter to all Black women who are navigating the glorious landscape of our crowns. Through this brilliant collection of wisdom, vulnerability, affirmation and deep, deep affection, St. Clair not only reminds her little sister how glorious her hair is, but she offers an illuminated narrative for all Black women to sit back and feel seen and celebrated.
— Rachel Cargle, public academic, writer, and lecturer
This book has reminded me that the complexities of Black hair have yet to be detangled strand by strand. Through these narratives, more people will see their value, strength, and uniqueness, and will gain the courage to live boldly and beautifully—just as our Creator imagined.
— Daphne Lee, Dance Theatre of Harlem
I honestly don’t have the words to explain how life changing this book is. I read my younger sister the first page and she was in tears by the end. Thank you so much for the work you put into this project. My family will treasure it forever.

Why I created My Beautiful Black hair

When my little sister Khloe was just four years old, with tears running down her face, she told my dad that she hated her afro because her white classmates were making fun of it. My anger turned into sadness, which quickly turned into joy: this was an opportunity for me to teach my little sister that her curls—just like everything else that comes from our Black ancestors—are beautiful. I spent the next two years photographing and interviewing 101 Black women with natural hair. We laughed, cried, and shared personal stories about our hair. After years of editing, revising, and reworking, these photographs and interviews have finally been published in my debut photojournalism book, My Beautiful Black Hair: 101 Natural Hair Stories from the Sisterhood (Chronicle Books, September 2021).
